So why do I feel so outraged about the impact of blue light? And that no one is telling the story? And that some very large companies continue to pump out CFL’s (compact fluorescent bulbs)?
Because to me it’s common sense that our body takes cues from our environment and light is a very significant component of our life, just like temperature, food, smell, and many environmental factors.
But light is a very significant part of our health that we can control. But the real irony of this – or I should say travesty – is we think we are doing good by buying the “curly” CFL bulbs, but it’s basically poisoning us and causing all kinds of genomic reactions that are not healthy for us.
I am going to go into a little of the science in a moment, but the basic component is that Blue Light signals to our body to WAKE UP and GET MOVING. So, if you’re getting these “Cues” at night, your normal Circadian Rhythm doesn’t happen and that means less melatonin. You might not be aware of this, but melatonin is the strongest antioxidant we have. Less melatonin causes sleep disorders, which lead to all kinds of disease.
Thats what you need to know. And what you need to tell everyone you know!

Our eyes have special, recently-discovered cells that communicate with hormonal and circadian control centers in the brain.They are especially sensitive to blue light and control secretion of many different hormones, melatonin being the most well-known. It’s secreted at night and it is very important that we get enough of it in our circulation. In addition to promoting sleep, melatonin is a potent anti-oxidant that regulates immune responses, as well as blood-glucose levels, which is important in appetite suppression and preventing diabetes.
Blue light has several physiological effects, which are desirable or not desirable, depending on when we are exposed to it. Blue light suppresses melatonin and keeps us awake at night, which may not be desirable, but it also increases our alertness and body temperature, which is necessary in the morning or when we need to focus on a task.
It makes perfect sense that sunlight is the perfect light for us.
Outdoors, we’re exposed to different wavelengths of light over the course of a day and our biological rhythms have evolved to be in phase with the changing wavelengths. But indoors and at night, most of us do not get phase-appropriate light, and this can negatively impact our well-being. Our alertness, sleep quality, productivity, mood, safety, and health are all impacted by light according to several controlled, clinical studies. The World Health Organization named night shift work a probable carcinogen and the American Medical Association has called attention to “light at night.” Scientific and clinical studies since the 1980s conclude that ambient light during the day or night has numerous psychological and physiological effects on humans.
